Alphonso Mango

Description

Alphonso mangoes, also known as Hapus or Hapoos, are one of the most prized mango varieties originating from India. They are oval to oblong in shape, averaging 10–15 cm in length and 150–300 grams in weight. Their thin, golden-yellow skin may develop a red blush and is often marked with harmless black or brown spots. Beneath lies vibrant orange, fibreless flesh that is dense, juicy, and buttery smooth. Renowned for their unique fragrance—musky, floral, and sweet—Alphonso mangoes deliver a rich, complex flavor with hints of honey, melon, stone fruit, and tropical spices.

🌞 Growing & Care Guide

Alphonso mango trees require warm, tropical to subtropical climates to thrive. Ideal for regions with dry summers and minimal rainfall during flowering and fruiting. This variety is grafted for consistent fruit quality and should be planted in well-draining soil with ample sunlight exposure. Though it takes effort, the reward is high—a world-famous mango with premium quality and unmatched taste.

☀️ Sunlight & Soil

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours daily)

  • Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral loamy soil

  • pH Range: 5.5 – 7.5

  • Note: Avoid waterlogged or clay-heavy soils to prevent root rot.

💧 Watering

  • Young Trees: Water every 2–3 days for the first few months.

  • Mature Trees: Water deeply once a week during the growing season.

  • Tip: Reduce watering post-monsoon and during fruit maturation to enhance flavor concentration.

🌱 Fertilization

  • Apply a balanced NPK (10:10:10) fertilizer three times a year (pre-flowering, fruit setting, and post-harvest).

  • Supplement with micronutrients like magnesium, iron, and zinc to improve fruit quality and leaf health.

✂️ Pruning

  • Timing: Prune during the dormant season (post-harvest).

  • Goal: Remove dead or crowded branches to improve airflow and light penetration.

  • Training: Shape young trees with a strong central leader and well-spaced lateral branches.

🍂 Mulching

  • Apply a 2–4 inch layer of organic mulch (straw, leaves, or bark) around the base.

  • Maintain a 6-inch gap from the trunk to prevent fungal infections.

  • Helps retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weed growth.

🐛 Pest & Disease Control

  • Common Pests: Mango hoppers, fruit flies, mealybugs

  • Diseases: Anthracnose, powdery mildew, mango malformation

  • Control Measures: Neem oil sprays, copper fungicides, and regular orchard hygiene are effective. Use pheromone traps for fruit flies.

🌱 Support for Young Trees

  • Stake young trees to protect them from wind damage.

  • Provide shade nets if grown in high-heat areas to reduce sunscald during initial establishment.

🍎 Harvesting

  • Harvest typically begins when the fruit skin starts turning golden-yellow and emits a sweet aroma.

  • Alphonso mangoes are hand-picked to avoid skin damage and maintain their delicate quality.

  • Ripen naturally at room temperature, avoiding refrigeration until fully ripe.

🍃 Thinning

  • Remove excess or deformed fruits when they are small to ensure better-sized, high-quality fruits.

  • Prevents overburdening the tree and improves air circulation among clusters.

❄️ Winter Protection

  • While mature trees are somewhat cold-tolerant, protect young trees from frost using covers or wraps.

  • Mulch the base heavily in cooler climates to insulate roots.
